LEV/Fume Cupboard Decommission & Removal
LEV systems and fume cupboards are designed to capture and contain potentially hazardous contaminants, fumes, gases and vapours generated through industrial processes and laboratory experiments. Careful planning and execution are therefore essential when it comes time to decommission and remove them.
At IHSL, our qualified technicians have decommissioned and removed countless LEV systems and fume cupboards from schools, laboratories, universities and other institutions in a safe and efficient manner.
What does decommission and removal involve?
- Initial Assessment – First, we determine whether the system is ducted or recirculating, and understand which methods of extraction the system utilises. Then we identify the potential hazards we may be dealing with, such as chemical residues, asbestos or radioisotopes.
- Decontamination – IHSL always takes the necessary steps to ensure a safe and thorough decontamination of whatever harmful materials we find. While some contaminants have specific protocols surrounding the decommissioning of a system exposed to them, others (such as asbestos) may require the assistance of specialist licensed professionals, which we will arrange on your behalf.
- Removal and Disposal – We carefully strip out and disconnect the fume cupboard or LEV system from the rest of the infrastructure, such as ductwork, fans and electrical circuits.
- Rebalancing Remaining Sytems – If one fume cupboard is removed from a shared LEV system, the others will require careful rebalancing in order to guarantee proper airflow. In addition, fan speeds and make-up air systems may need adjustment to account for the reduction in the volume of air being extracted.
- Disposal – IHSL disposes of all waste, along with the relevant system components, in accordance with environmental guidelines and local regulations. To learn more about this, please navigate to our Responsibility page.
- Testing – In cases where only parts of the system have been removed, it may be necessary to perform a thorough system test to ensure everything is working properly and safely.

Fume Cupboard Removal, Reinstallation & LEV Maintenance
IHSL recognises that a reconditioned fume cupboard still has value. Whether you wish to maximise the resale value of your redundant fume cupboard or simply move it to a new location for reinstallation, we take every precaution to ensure a seamless removal, keeping every component intact where possible.
This not only eliminates the additional cost of buying a new product but also helps to reduce your carbon footprint.
In addition to decommissions and removals, we undertake LEV/fume cupboard cleans, maintenance and system tests as part of our services.
Both of these are covered in greater detail on the relevant service pages.
We undertake all work on LEV systems and fume cupboards in accordance with the relevant Environmental, Health & Safety and Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations.
